Petrified wood forms when trees are buried under layers of sediment in an environment with minimal oxygen, which prevents decay by bacteria and fungi. Over time, groundwater rich in dissolved minerals percolates through the sediment and wood, carrying minerals such as silica. These minerals gradually replace the organic matter in the wood, preserving its structure in stone.
It often exhibits a range of colors, including various shades of brown, red, yellow, and gray, depending on the types of minerals present during the fossilization process. The mineralization can produce striking patterns and textures within the wood, resembling the growth rings and grain patterns of the original tree.
