The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large carnivorous mammal and is the largest bear species. It is well-adapted to life in the Arctic and is primarily found in the region surrounding the Arctic Circle, including the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas, and surrounding landmasses. Polar bears have a dense and water-resistant coat with a layer of insulating underfur. The fur appears white, which provides effective camouflage in their snowy environment. Their large, powerful paws are equipped with sharp claws and provide effective propulsion while swimming.
Polar bears have a layer of blubber that helps insulate them from the cold and provides energy reserves. Their small ears and short snout also help minimize heat loss.
